"Web Site Enables Consumers to Legally Download Box Office Hits from Suppliers Including MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros.
Soft Launch to Gather Feedback, Evaluate Consumer Preferences
SANTA MONICA, CA - November 11, 2002 -- Movielink, the online movie rental service, launches today, offering U.S. broadband Internet users the opportunity to rent and download a wide selection of major motion pictures. The site, accessible at www.movielink.com, will initially roll out on a national basis to a limited number of customers whose feedback will be used to evaluate and refine the Movielink service. During this initial phase, Movielink will be testing various consumer preferences as well as product enhancements to ensure that the service meets the needs of savvy broadband subscribers.
"With more than 25 million broadband residences, we believe the market is now ready for the launch of a new Internet movie rental service," Movielink CEO Jim Ramo said. "We are combining cutting edge technology with the best in motion picture entertainment to offer consumers an exciting entertainment experience."
Movielink will initially offer more than 170 contemporary and classic films, including A Beautiful Mind, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Ocean's Eleven, We Were Soldiers, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sleepless in Seattle, Blue Velvet, Jerry Maguire, Air Force One and A League of Their Own. All suppliers independently determine when a movie becomes available. Movielink expects that new releases will generally be available at the same time as they are offered on pay-per-view and video-on-demand services.
The Movielink film selection, which initially will be provided by the five founding studios on a non-exclusive basis, is expected to evolve based on consumer interest and the addition of other suppliers.
Visitors to Movielink's Web site can view free film trailers, clips and still photographs from titles available on the site.
"Movielink is thrilled to offer the best selection of big box office hits available for immediate download," Ramo said. "The service is easy to use, titles are never out of stock, and movies can be viewed anywhere using a consumer's laptop."
How it Works
Movielink is available to U.S. Internet users with broadband connections. Consumers can easily browse Movielink's user-friendly site and view trailers of available titles without charge. Once customers are ready to rent a movie, they register with Movielink and pay for their rental via credit card. Each download, which has an average file size of about 500MB, is valid for up to 30 days, and customers will have 24 hours to view the film once play is initiated. Movielink also offers VCR-like functions such as fast-forward, rewind and pause. Users are charged on a per-film basis and do not pay a subscription or membership fee to rent movies or browse the Movielink site.
Movielink Technology
The Movielink service works with most personal computers running Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP and higher and requires a broadband connection of 128kbps or faster.
Movielink offers movie downloads in both the RealNetworks RealPlayer 8.0 and Microsoft Windows Media Player formats. Both players can be downloaded for free at their respective Web sites. Movielink employs digital rights management technologies as well as other protective measures to enable the legitimate distribution of content over the Internet.
